In the Netherlands, everyone is entitled to good healthcare and, as a resident, you are free to choose which GP you want to register with. To ensure that healthcare is accessible to everyone, you are required to have self-insurance in the Netherlands.
In the Netherlands, if you have health problems, you must first see a GP. This doctor can treat you directly or refer you to a specialist if necessary. If you need immediate medical assistance while your GP is not there, you go to the GP out-of-hours service. If the situation is life-threatening, call 112.
You can go to the GP if you suffer from physical complaints, stress, anxiety, bad sleep and gloom. But also for preventive help with illnesses, assistance with illnesses that will not go away, such as asth-ma, high blood pressure and diabetes. The GP offers first aid and you can also go there for minor surgery.
